JDF-48 Persists Over Cordova Bay-48, 3-2
February 7, 2018 7:30pm Royal Bay Turf

Probably one of the best fought games of the season thus far, both teams came out with offensive fervor from the starting whistle.  Within the first minute, Cordova Bay nearly scored on a header from a corner kick that was flying toward the top right corner, when out of nowhere George K leaped and tipped the ball up against the cross bar.  With that scare, our team gained its consciousness and began to attack with crisp, short passes, moving the ball well up the field.  We thought we had our first goal when Paulo skirted the ball by the goalie, but then watched the ball roll up against the left post and then putter along the goal line only to be swiped up by the goalie.  Not long after, Mirek brought the ball into their 18 and gave a crisp pass to an open Joel who one-touched it into the right side of the goal for our 1st.  Having drawn first blood, we relaxed a bit too much perhaps, as we watched their team come back with gusto and score a beautiful half-volley rocket on a cross over our defenders' heads to the left far post.  They were still congratulating themselves on that goal when they watched dumbfounded as we kicked off and combined one, two, then three passes to a streaking Mirek who charged with the ball toward the net and sneaked it by the inside post to score our 2nd.  Ric came into the game and we thought he'd give us a bit of buffer when he crashed a hammer shot against the crossbar.  With about 10 minutes left in the half, they caught us off guard when George came out of his area and attempted to kick the ball up field, but mis-hit it to one of their guys.  With an open net, their player settled the ball and took a crack from about 35 out and way over against the right sideline, a beautiful shot that curled into the open net.  So we went into the half time rest tied at 2-2.  Both teams came out fighting in the second half, and we went back and forth.  Our defense continually shut down their creative and talented offense, and Ping stuck to their main threat like glue.  Ric again hit the post on what we thought was a sure goal, and we had another goal called offside.  With about 10 left in the game, Joel and Paulo combined with a couple short passes, and then Joel pushed the ball to Paulo who was heading for the right corner.  All three defenders descended on him, thinking he'd try to dribble by, but instead Paulo pushed the ball back between all of them into the middle of the open field where Joel was left uncovered.  He went one-on-one with their goalie, kept his head, and dribbled by him to the left, then finished for our 3rd.  A great game with good spirit, clean play, and a result we all wanted!  Great play, boys.
