JDF-55 Hangs On for a Tie with Oak Bay Old Boys-55, 1-1

Maybe it was because we were all feeling slightly guilty for not being with our wives/partners/significant others on Valentines evening that we couldn't pull out a decisive win over the Oak Bay Old Boys.  The game was evenly matched and a good fight from the start.  OBOB did lend us a couple of their players, as we were short of men since a few of our guys did make "the right choice" for the evening.  I don't know what it says about our opponents that they had so many extras.  Nevertheless, we ended up playing a more defensive line up, with essentially 5 midfielders and one forward.  Oak Bay came out strong, managing the ball well in the middle with good speed and constant movement toward attacks.  Despite their creative and strong play, we consistently shut them down and created dangerous counterattacks.  This seems to be our strength when we have a few of the older 48s come out to help.  It was on one of these counterattacks that Paulo scored the first goal in the first half in a one-on-one with the goalie that he easily finished.  For the rest of the game we were mainly contained to our own half while we battled them defensively.  They were eager to push by us, especially their one midfielder who dribbled around several of our guys, only to be mowed down from behind by Kim who would have none of it.  So Kim got sent off for 10, and when he came back, he was ready to let the guy know what he really thought.  Keith hardly even blinked before sending them both off again.  Somehow, with about 15 to play, OBOB managed to get the ball to one of their guys in the goalie box right near the end line, and he was quickly descended upon by four of our players.  Dave O went at him a bit too eagerly and bumped him, sending the guy sprawling only too easily for a penalty call.  They tied it 1-1, and we decided to ratchet it up a notch for the last 10 minutes of play.  We made several good counter attacks, but couldn't quite get it by their goalie.  In the last minute of play we had our best chance, a breakaway down the left side with Paulo on the ball, he dribbled it by their outside defender and then dished it easily to a wide-open Dave O who had made a run up the middle and received the ball in the area.  We watched in what seemed like slow motion as Dave decided against settling the ball and instead cranked it on his first touch, sending a rocket 10 feet wide of the goal from only about 15 feet out.  We all then listened to the longest string of Portuguese swearing that we'd ever been treated to by Paulo, and the whistle blew to end the match.  Better luck next time, boys!
