JDF-40 Succumbs to Athletics-40, 2-3
September 19, 2018, 7:30PM, Royal Bay Turf

A cleanly fought match between the JDF 40s and Athletics, who brought out their “A" team to compete against what they knew would be a tough JDF side. Play was surprisingly even for the first third of the half, with good strings of passes by both sides, and the Athletics created some dangerous situations that failed only on the shot or the last pass. About two thirds into the half, JDF worked up the field, and Ryan L, with possession in the centre of the field at about 35 out, surprised the keeper and the defence by making a looping shot that curved over the goalie and into the net. The keeper didn’t even try to reach it, believing it was going high, and suddenly, JDF was up 1-0. Athletics turned on the burners and responded with a nice volley goal on a cross just before the half ended, bringing it to 1-1. After a good half-time pep talk, we settled down and concentrated on stringing passes together to maintain ball possession. Within the first five minutes of the second half, we had worked the ball around well in the defence and in the midfield, while George G broke up the middle from the centre defence, creating an extra attacking player, and was left undefended. It rattled them enough that, while they stopped the initial attack, they coughed up the ball and gave George and Adam an easy give and go in the area, leaving George alone with their goalie, and he slotted the ball easily into the right lower corner. Since we were up 2-1 very early in the second half, it gave the Athletics nearly 40 minutes to press, and press they did. We frustrated their attack well, with excellent defending by George and Dave C who worked the offside trap well. Gord, Zeb, Carlo, and Ryan helped us in the middle with calm play and good ball possession to frustrate their attempts to regain the ball in their attacks. But about 25 minutes in, their forward dribbled around the left defender and shot a perfect low ball across the goal and against the left post and in. About 10 minutes later, Athletics took advantage of a missed pass in our midfield, and their centre attacker cracked a hard shot from about 30 yards out looked to Kevin like it was going to go high, but then took a dip and tore into the back of the net. A 2-3 finish with a well-fought and clean match, boys. Nothing to hang our heads over, and we’ll be out to fight next time.
