JDF-48 Claws Back to Upset Castaways-48, 3-2
October 21, 2018, 12:00pm, Carnarvon Park

JDF-48 was glad for the help from our 40s players, Travis and Carlo, and Hugh from 55s last Sunday at sunny Carnarvon Park. The grass field was nicely kept, though it was a short and narrow field that had deceptive bumps that made the ball difficult to dribble and control. We brought out a capable squad and played a strong first half with several scoring opportunities that we just couldn't convert. Castaways did well enough to hold us off, but they only had a few credible attacks in the first half, one of which should have been an easy goal when their forward found himself with a rebounded ball and an open net, but he shot wide. Early in the second half, Castaways had a series of nice pass combinations and worked the ball to their strong mid-fielder who took a nice left-foot shot from just inside the 18 and put it in the right lower corner. 0-1. Only about 10 minutes later, we found ourselves down by 2 when they got a rebound and pushed it in. 0-2. We almost went down by three off a shot that hit the cross-bar hard and ricocheted down. They claimed it bounced into the goal, but the ref didn't see it that way, and neither did we. Kudos to our whole team that turned up the intensity quickly after their second goal. We pressured with various attacks, and our first goal came only about 5 minutes later when they attempted to clear the ball but it was brought back into play with Joel's header to Carlo who controlled it patiently above the 18 and then shot a nice looper into the left top corner. The play of the game came 10 minutes later on a corner that we won, and Ric took the corner shot that curled beautifully into the net for an "Olimpico", startling the goalie who had moved too far forward. 2-2. With about 10 minutes left, and the game momentum in our favour, we pressured and attacked. Our third goal came after the ball was bobbled around with traffic in their goal area, knocked down by one of their players with what looked like a hand ball, but the it fell to Paulo's feet and he tipped it passed the goalie into the right corner. 3-2, and an awesome comeback to keep our slate a clean 6-0-0! Great work boys!
