JDF-48 Grinds Down Cow Classics-48, 5-2
October 28, 2018, 12:00pm, Frances Kelsey Grass

With a mix of sunshine and rain on a nice fall morning at Frances Kelsey, we took to the field against the Cow Classics. We had 15 players and a solid crew. As is becoming our unfortunate habit over the past couple of games, we started strong with a few close opportunities that we didn't convert, and then suddenly found ourselves down 1-0 after they cruised from midfield with two open midfielders that tipped back and forth to each other to score. We didn't wait long to respond this time, though. We tied the game when our offense pressured their defenders, and when one made a weak pass back to their goalie, Paulo jumped on the opportunity to toe poke the loose ball into the net. 1-1. Only minutes later, Rob pushed a nice ball to the corner to Joel who brought it back across and dished it to a wide open Mirek who finished it easily, taking us into the lead 2-1. Again, a few minutes later, Mirek capitalized on yet another defensive error on their part, and this time, obliged Joel who was wide open and finished in a one-on-one with the goalie to make it 3-1. Second half started with a comedic error by the Cow Classic forward who received an errant back pass from Stu and found himself alone with the ball and our goalie, Kim, with no other player within 20 yards. We're still not sure what kind of faces Kim made to scare the guy so much (since no one was near enough to see), but he tried to scoop the ball over Kim and ended up hooking it about 15 yards wide and 10 yards short. We took a nice margin of 4-1 when Ric received a pass at the top of the 18, then in his signature move brought the ball from the left side across the middle top of the 18 and cranked one of his unstoppable shots into the left lower net. We thought we were cruising to an even wider margin when Dwight danced and prodded his way through the defense with the ball, twirling and spinning, and then dishing the ball through the goalie's legs on a final tip...that just wasn't quite enough tip and the ball spun with all sorts of English just feet in front of the empty goal line before one of their players punched it out for a corner. Then Dwight did his classic howl and fell to the ground in despair. All good story-making. Cow Classics did manage a second very nice goal on a free kick that was perfectly weighted over the wall and into the lower right net without being touched. 4-2. We did finish in the last minute with a dish-off from Paulo to Joel into the right side of the goalie area, and when the goalie charged, Joel chipped it over him into the net to make it 5-2. Great game, boys!
