JDF-40 Fights Back to Victory against Zgoda-40, 4-2
November 14, 2018, 7:30pm, Royal Bay Turf

It was a beautiful clear night at Royal Bay. Zgoda showed up to challenge the mighty JDF 40s with a squad that were more talented than normal, looking for their first win against the JDF dynasty in 37 years. With call ups like Wally, Ping, and Ken, it was not to be on this day despite their efforts. The game started with JDF ball movement and pressure. It took 25 minutes to pot the first goal. Poontra beat the wide defender and passed the ball off to Strickland at the top of the box for what was a soft-placed shot to the goalie's left corner while being screened by Carlo Legg. Controversy ensued after the goal with protests by Zgoda that Carlo was offside, however the ref was having none of it. It remained that way until the half thanks to Dave Cung, our goalie, for stopping breakaways and some very good saves by Zgoda’s goalie. The second half brought a goalie change for JDF. Cung's selfishness to play center back(lol) could have been very costly to the team. His decision to come out to defend the shut out while putting Strickland, the only goal scorer in the first half between the pipes -- who was looking to be the first goalie in JDF history to record a shut-out and score a goal in the same game -- was costly. Zgoda was having none of it. At the 20 minute mark of the half, Zgoda’s left mid fielder drew JDF’s defenders to the left side leaving the striker wide open for a pass and an easy tap in while Strickland went to fetch his water bottle from behind the net. It was only 10 minutes later the exact same counter attack took place. Left mid fielder down the left side cutting across. This time they took a shot to the far post leaving no other choice other than a kick save by Strickland allowing a juicy rebound for the striker with an easy tap in. Where were Rob’s defenders? But that wasn’t it! It was the "George Godoy Show" from there on in. With 15 minutes remaining, George subs himself to the forward line replacing the speedy Adam who had struggled to find the onion bag despite the chances. It wasn’t Adam’s night. George with the tying, George with the winner, and George with the clincher to complete the hat trick to lift his team to the 4-2 victory!!! The beer tasted amazing on the night! P.S. JDF’s goaltending in the second half was amazing!
