JDF-48 Settles on Draw with Duncan-48, 2-2

After losing to JDF-48 earlier in the fall on our home turf, Duncan came out determined to make it even. This is a solid and talented team that has only lost one game (to us!) in their season, so they seemed confident with their lineup as the kickoff whistle blew. But, in the first 5 minutes of the game, we surprised and deflated them when Ralph gave a nice looping cross into the area that confused the goalie as it took its first bounce just inside the 18. The goalie came out to cut it off, but Paulo, who was charging to the ball, caught it on the upward bounce with his head and lobbed it neatly over the goalie's outstretched arms and into the net. 1-0 very early. Not two minutes later, Duncan was building an attack, when one of their midfielders swung in a wide shot that looked more like a cross, but it curled in enough to hit the post and in. 1-1. Then the scrapping began, back and forth, and their forward, Ali, who manages to keep the ball somehow attached to him with a tether worked our defense hard. He got dropped and hacked plenty by our guys, enough to begin some type of competition between Arv, Lyle, Brian, or Dwight for new team goon. Dwight did manage to score once again on a charging follow through tip past the goalie for his 4th goal of the season (and 2nd against this team) which brought us to a 2-1 lead. But then, shortly after once again, Duncan managed to chip a long and high hanging shot into the goal area that somehow slipped through Kim's hands that was then tapped in. 2-2 at half. Second half was back and forth, though Duncan clearly came out stronger than us and dominated most of the half. Ali finally drew a penalty, and their team celebrated their go-ahead goal too early, as the ref called for a re-take of the penalty that was shot before the whistle blew and Kim complained. Then Kim proceeded to make the save of his life on Ali's second try at the penalty kick with a dive to the left, keeping us in the game at 2-2. The ref called the game about 5 minutes early, as we all began to get a little feisty when Ali took a diving "trip" after Dwight beat him to the ball, and feigning near-death, pleaded successfully for the ref to issue Dwight a yellow. Final was a 2-2 finish and a tough game that could have ended better!
